Macramé Plant Hanger Supplies
When it comes to macramé for beginners, you need some basic macramé supplies to get you started. One great thing is you only need to use your hands, as you will be tying knots and do not even need a metal ring.
You will need a 5mm macramé cord 220 meters single ply. Next, invest in sharp scissors like a Fiskars 24cm long to cut through the macramé cord.
Macramé Plant Hanger without a Ring
Making your plant hanger without using a ring you can do in two different ways.
Square Knot Loop
Using this macramé knot is the best way to start your plant hanger without a ring.
- Gather eight macramé cords together. The best is to start in the middle of the rope using the outer left and right threads as working cables to make the square knots.
- Make sure you keep adding a square knot after completing the first one at the top and the bottom. Doing this ensures that the strands of rope remain the same length hanging down.

For making a square knot, tying it is right over left and left over right.
- Hold one end of the cord in each of your hands.
- Pass the right one over and under the left-hand one.
- Take the rope end in your left hand and pass it over and under the one in your right hand.
- Tighten up the knot pulling both the running ends simultaneously.
Once you make up to ten square knots, you can fold the part in half and make one big square knot with your outer left and right cords to gather the rest of the yarn in the center.
Overhand Knot
The macramé knot is another simple way to start your project and works well for any DIY macramé plant hanger.
- Take the macramé rope and fold it in half, forming a macramé hanging loop.
- Now take the folded end, twisting it through the loop using all the cords to form your overhand knot.
- Hold the end rope and pull lightly on the knot to ensure it forms a small loop at the end.
You will see you formed the starting point of your plant hanger without using a ring or too many knots. Alternatively, you can check out this video to start your macramé plant hanger in five simple steps.
