Neon Pothos Indoor Care and Growing Guide

Neon pothos is a common variety of the golden pothos with a trailing habit.

The neon or close-to-yellow leaves look refreshing and relaxed, unlike the common yellowing of leaves when the plant lacks nutrients or light.

The neon consistent, blast coloration is stunning, which makes the plant unique ( although not rare ), but you seldom see any plant with a natural yellow tone color, just like the neon philodendron vines.

Pothos are perfect plants in hanging baskets or on trellises.

What is Neon Pothos

Neon Pothos (scientifically known as Epipremnum aureum ‘neon” )  is a vining plant with a bright neon green color consistency, from its stems to its leaves.

This houseplant belongs to the Araceae family. This plant is known as the “Ceylon creeper” and “Devil’s ivy.” The plant is easy to grow and is known to grow in low to medium light.

This plant can grow well in subtropical areas of Australia and Asia. This houseplant is known for tolerating fluorescent lights, so it is considered an ideal office plant.

The plant is also known as an air detoxifier when grown in areas like lobbies or parking.

Neon Pothos Plant Care Basics

Soil

humus rich soil

Neon pothos is not choosy regarding soil, provided it is loamy, adequately moist, and offers good drainage. Conventional houseplant soil typically suffices for these easy-care plants.

Alternatively, you can make your potting mix for proper drainage; a blend of equal parts houseplant soil, perlite, and orchid bark can be formulated for a more aerated composition, offering a chunky, organic soil mix that is sure to delight your pothos.

Water

Let the top 2 to 3 inches of soil dry before watering your neon pothos again. When you do water, make sure to soak the soil thoroughly.

Neon pothos can get sick if their roots sit in water too long, so it’s essential to have a pot with suitable drainage holes to prevent this.

Ideal Lighting

This plant needs to be placed to receive bright, indirect light. Although, the plant can thrive in an area where it could receive low sunlight exposure.

It is best to place your plant near a sunny window with a sheer curtain or a glass window as an indoor plant. Although pothos can tolerate low light, putting them in an area with low light exposure is not ideal.

Provide sufficient artificial lighting and occasionally expose them to morning sunlight for healthier growth.

Temperature and Humidity

plant temperature requirement

Neon pothos thrive in warm and humid conditions like their native tropical habitat. This makes them an excellent houseplant able to flourish indoors—ideal temperatures for neon pothos range from 55 to 90 degrees Fahrenheit or 15 to 35 degrees Celsius.

Normal household humidity levels are usually sufficient, though additional humidity from a humidifier or pebble tray can promote faster, more robust growth. The neon pothos’ heat and moisture preference allows them to grow happily inside.

Fertilizer

While fertilizer is not required for pothos plants, applying it periodically can promote vigorous growth. The best time to fertilize is during the active growing season from early spring through late summer.

Use a balanced liquid fertilizer, following label directions for dilution and application frequency. Fertilizing monthly is sufficient for most pothos. Rich, organic potting mixes provide some nutrients already, so extra fertilizer may not be needed.

However, periodic feeding is beneficial for healthy leaves and strong plant development.

Propagation

plant propagation

A common way to propagate the plant is through cuttings from the plant’s stem. This method is the easiest way to ensure the plant will spring up.

  1. Cut a stem just below a leaf node.
  2. Put the neon pothos cutting in a water container, ensuring the node is underwater, but the leaves are above.
  3. Roots will grow from the node in about a week or two.
  4. Once the roots are about 2.5 cm long, you can plant the stem in soil or a pot.

Potting

Repot only when rootbound, and that’s about two to three years. Choose a well-draining pot an inch bigger than the previous pot.

Pruning neon pothos

Trim away any dead or yellow leaves to keep pests away. If your plant doesn’t get enough light, it might grow too tall and skinny, so pruning helps it grow more stems and become bushier.

Neon Pothos Common Pests and Problems

Be vigilant for common houseplant pests that can cause trouble if they infect your plant.

Look out for sap-sucking insects like mealybugs, scale, spider mites, and fungus gnats, often found among many houseplants.

Sagging Leaves

When your plant’s leaves hang, it’s a sign it’s thirsty! Give your neon pothos a good watering, and you should see the leaves perk up again.

Brown Tips

If you notice brown tips on your neon pothos’ leaves, it could be due to underwatering or dry conditions. Try watering your plant more frequently and avoiding drafty spots or direct sunlight.

Sparse Growth

If your neon pothos starts looking leggy, with long vines and few leaves, it needs more light. Move it to a brighter spot to encourage fuller growth.
