Plants That Will Grow Big Even In Small Spaces

Have you relocated, or changed your office? Maybe renovated your space? Or do you just want to ennoble the place where you spend most of your time? Here is an idea – why not buy one of those big house plants and fill the space with greenery and nature?

I will admit that the subject has me a little biased since I am a great lover of tall houseplants. After a lot of thinking, I have finally put five of them on a list. I am presenting to you some of the indoor big plants that will brighten up your space:

5 Plants That Will Grow into a Big Space

1. Rubber Plant

rubber plant ficus

The rubber plant of Ficus elastica has large shiny green foliage.

Place the pot in a bright place, but away from direct sunlight.

The rubber plant can also tolerate lower light conditions, so it could be your choice when it comes to big office plants.

Try to maintain temperature levels between 15 and 30 degrees Celsius.

Water it moderately –twice a month during the winter, and once a week during the rest of the year.

Occasionally mist and wipe the leaves to raise the level of humidity.

The soil needs to be well-drained, so it is best to use a soil mixture that contains some perlite (or sand), pine bark, and peat moss.

You can fertilize your rubber plant a couple of times a month during the growing period.

They can reach up to 15 m in height in nature!

Kept indoors, rubber plants can grow to be 2 or 3 m tall.
Note:
You should buy a young rubber plant tree.

They have a hard time adjusting to new surroundings when they are mature.

 2. European Olive

European Olive

Olea Europea – what can be more extravagant than this tree in your home or workspace?

European olive has to be one of my favorites when it comes to huge indoor plants.

You’ll need to find a sunny place with plenty of direct sunlight.

Also, regularly rotate the pot, because all tree parts need an equal amount of sunlight.

Good drainage is essential, so use a potting mix similar to the one you would use for succulents, for example.

Let the soil topcoat dry out before watering.

Also, never mist European olive!

It likes dry temperatures.

The temperature range should be from 18 to 24 degrees Celsius.

They can grow up to 3 m in height!

If you want your European olive tree to be smaller, go for the dwarf version.

They can be up to 1.8 m tall.

Note:  Although it can be cultivated as an indoor plant, olive is still an outdoor plant.

That means it’ll need to be outside for a few hot months of the year, during the hot days.

This doesn’t make it one of the best big office plants, but it doesn’t diminish its beauty.

3. Corn Plant

Did someone say ‘extravagant large apartment plants’?

Because when I hear that, I immediately think of the corn plant.

The long woody stems shrub growing in bundles and long, variegated foliage is what makes the corn plant one of the most extraordinary indoor tall plants.

Place it somewhere bright but away from direct sunlight.

The soil should be moist but well-drained at the same time.

Water once a week.

Rise humidity level by misting and/or using a humidifier.

Moderate room temperatures from 18 to 27 degrees Celsius will be okay.

Corn plant canes can be very long – up to 2 meters!

Still, once you cut the top off, they will stop growing in height.

Thus, just cut the top off a little when you feel like they are tall enough.

Note:  The corn plant is sensitive to fluoride, so you shouldn’t use tap water for watering.

Use distilled instead.

4. Citrus Tree

Citrus Tree

Now, having a tree indoor plant is a serious flex, but having a citrus tree indoors is more than that because it takes effort to make a citrus tree thrive indoors.

Still, once you manage to rise your little citrus tree, you will feel like the king of indoor large plants.

The citrus leaves are green and shiny.

Of course, there are a lot of cultivars to choose from like lemon, lime, kumquat… you name it.

It is pretty hard for an indoor citrus tree to bear fruit, but the tree itself will beautify the room in any case.

Find a place with a lot of direct sunlight.

Citruses like moderate indoor temperatures around 20 degrees Celsius.

Still, nighttime temperatures should be a little lower, from 5 to 10 degrees Celsius.

Room humidity levels will be just fine throughout the year.

Still, it is best to use a humidifier during the winter since the air tends to become drier at that period.

The soil should be nutritious but well-drained at the same time.

It should always be moist and never waterlogged.

Fertilization is required.

Use a special fertilizer for citruses.

Citrus in a pot can grow up to an astonishing 2 meters in height!

Note:  Although they are some of the most lovable indoor tall houseplants, citruses are a little demanding.

It is the same when it comes to their temperature requirements, as well.

They are very sensitive to cold drafts.

Thus, always keep them away from open windows, especially during wintertime.

5. Jade Plant

Although they are some of the most favorite dwarf office plants throughout the world, the jade plant can be a tall indoor plant, as well. Jade plants can grow up to 6 feet tall when they mature.

The most important thing when it comes to jade plant care – is enough sunlight.

They need a lot of direct sunlight to thrive.

Because of that, they are tolerant to higher temperatures – even though their optimal temperature range goes from 18 to 24 degrees Celsius, they’ll adjust to temperatures higher than that, as well.

Let the soil topcoat dry out before you water it.

Still, never let the potting mix become completely dry!

Fertilize once a month.

The beautiful bushy plant can grow to be up to 1.5 m tall!

Note:  Before fertilizing your jade plant, ensure you have watered it!

If you add fertilizer to the dry soil, it may burn the roots.
