Excerpt from Lorenzi’s Fruits in Brazil:

“A deciduous shrub, with purplish, tortuous branches, 0,3-2,2 m (1-6 feet) tall, native to the dry savannas (cerrados arenosos) and (campos rupestres) montane savanna in the states of Goiás, Mato Grosso and Mato Grosso do Sul.  Leaves simple, coriaceous, discolorous, petiolate, 4-9 cm long, frequently with galls. Flowers from October to January (in Brazil).

Fruits are compound, oblong in shape with a  papillose surface, orangy red in color with a firm, carnose pulp, the same color as the outside, with a sweet, aromatic flavor, black seeds are dispersed through out the interior; the fruits generally mummify on the plant, after maturing, if not eaten by animals”

Further tips from Frutas Raras:

“Tips for cultivation: Slow growing shrub which appreciates red sandy soils with rapid drainage of rain water, is resistant to light frosts to -3°C (27°F). The plant will only fruit in full sun and should be planted in virgin acid soil with pH 5.5.

Propagation: Seeds are dormant and take 100 days to 18 months to germinate, preferring full sun and sandy substrate. The seedlings grow slowly and can be planted in place with definitely size of 10 cm (4 inches). The fruit begins in the age of 4 to 5 anos, depending on soil and cultural treatments.

Planting: Should be planted in full sunny virgin land in spacing of 1 to 2 m (3 to 7 feet) between lines. The holes must be filled with 40% of sand and about 500 kg of organic compost well mixed, if the soil is very acid, add 100 kg  of limestone and let influence for 3 months before planting. Water with 10 l of water per week during the first 2 months. ”Tips for cultivation: Slow growing shrub which appreciates red sandy soils with rapid drainage of rain water, is resistant to light frosts to -3°C (27°F). I always struggle to find plants that will grow in the full sun, clay soil area behind my house, but this plant is hanging in and growing. I can’t wait til the hummingbirds start to come.

It arrived intact, just in need of some care. I’m happy to have got this one, this tree means a lot to me – one of my favorite as a child in the countryside of Brazil.

I have purchased now three cold hardy citrus (citrandarin, and swingle citrumelo) both are in ground, doing great, but this thomasville cintrangaquat is shriveled, looks dry, and not happy. Little concerned this one is not going to make it and do as well as the other two.
