5 Native Christmas Fern bare root
Christmas fern got its name because it stays green right through the holiday season. It is a robust, leathery fern which has glossy, green fronds year-round. The fronds grow in clusters from a crownless rootstock and range from 1-2 ft. in length. Fertile fronds are taller. The once-divided fronds with pointed pinnae result in a medium to coarse texture. The silvery fiddleheads emerge in early spring.
Christmas fern is very easy to establish and grow where conditions are right. It requires cool, moist, well-drained soil in shade. In the right spot, it can be a good, evergreen border or accent plant. Though often used as a groundcover, it is a clumping fern, not forming a continuous, undifferentiated carpet the way some ferns do.
Planting Bare Root Ferns –
Trying to figure out which end of the tuber is up can be daunting. Sometimes the tip is visible on the top portion and other times there will be root hairs extending from the bottom. If in doubt, the tuber can be planted in a sideways position without affecting future growth.
The top of the tuber should be approximately 1 to 2 inches below the top of the ground. Cover lightly with aged compost mix to keep the ground cool and moist. Soil should be kept lightly moist (not wet or damp) for the fern to put on new growth. When planting tubers late in the growing season, such as late summer, often they will not put on any new top growth until the following spring. The ferns will grow larger each year until they top out in size about the 4th year.
Cutting the fall die back to the ground and applying a fresh layer of mulch or straw will help to protect the fern tubers from popping out of the ground over winter freeze and thaw cycles as well as from squirrels or other critters digging up the bulbs for winter food.

It’s smaller than I thought, it’s will be years before I can actually plant it in the ground
planted as soon as recieved nothing happening yet??
Much like another reviewer stated, some of the 15 bare root cardinal flowers were mushy. There was not 15 plants in the order either, more like 12. Planted and hope the remaining bare roots (which appear healthy) grow. Shipped quickly. Packed in ziploc but I did have some peat moss in with them.
These didn’t fair well, not sure why they are not doing well?
Not really a fan of how this was shipped. The plants were in a ziplock bag, and in a big envelope with the built in single layer bubble wrap. I’m surprised they arrived without being pulverized. There was nothing in the bag to keep the plants moist. Some of the leaves are bent and mangled. All plants have good roots, and I think they will bounce back alright. Just disappointed in the lack of care of the packaging
The seedling looked pretty healthy, but didn’t survive the transplant.
Items arrived on time. I did not have much luck getting the ferns to grow.
