Rat Tail cactus (Aporocactus flagelliformis) is a trailing stem that is native to Central America, where it thrives in full sun to partial shade and a well-drained soil mix. It has long bright green stems, brown-yellow bristly spines, and beautiful red-pink flowers in spring as they mature. It can grow up to 5 ft tall and resemble a rat tail.
Growing this plant is easy, low maintenance, and drought tolerant. You can grow them in a pot or a hanging basket. Allow the soil to dry before watering them, and make sure there is an excellent draining hole to prevent root rot.
You can grow them in USDA Hardiness Zones 10-11. Rat tail cactus is not cold hardy and loves moderate humid conditions. Fertilizing them once a month during their growing season using a liquid fertilizer will help them grow faster.
The only way to propagate them is via stem cuttings and seeds.
