Opuntia Microdasys (Bunny Ear Cactus) is a beautiful decorative cactus that is native to Northern Mexico. Bunny Ear Cactus has flat pads covered with glochids, light green, round to oval shape just like bunny ears, and yellow flowers will bloom as they mature. This cactus can grow up to 3-4ft tall and 4-5 ft wide.

It is a popular houseplant because it’s easy to care for and doesn’t need much attention to survive. It is a lovely addition to your collection of plants, especially if you have it displayed in a beautiful decorative pot. This plant appreciates bright and direct sunlight and well-drained soil.

Bunny Ear Cactus is sensitive to over-watering, so allow the soil to dry before watering again, and make sure there is an excellent draining hole in the pot to prevent root rot. Fertilizing them during their growing season in spring using a succulent fertilizer will help them boost their growth. You can propagate them via cuttings and seeds.

You can grow them in Hardiness Zones 9a-11b.

***

The cacti is native to northern Mexico and desert regions stretching into Arizona. This plant has the appearance of a shrub, and spreads out to cover between 2-5 feet of ground as a mature plant. Named for its visual appearance, the Bunny Ear Cactus, also called the Polka-Dot Cactus, has the scientific name of Opuntia microdasys. The spines come off with a simple touch, and are best removed from flesh with tweezers.

The Polka-dot Cactus covers its mature pads with closely spaced glochids, or small mounds of prickles that are designed to detach when impacted by something. Once fully formed, the glochids form on the new plant segment. The glochids are so loosely attached that a strong breeze can cause them to go airborne.

  1. Beautiful plant . Unfortunately the post office did not handle it with care. By the time I received my plant it was out of the pot. I put in another pot. Hopefully she will survive
