Growing elderberries is not all that difficult. They can tolerate different conditions like poor soil or overly wet areas. One thing growing elderberries cannot tolerate, however, is drought. When planting elderberry bushes, you should note that the berries will grow on the bushes the first year you plant them. Just remember that the berries will do better the second year. Elderberry planting is done best in well-draining, loamy soil. Sandy soils should be improved by adding a few inches (5 to 10 cm.) of organic matter. When elderberry planting, make sure to allow for cross-pollination. Therefore, two or more cultivars can be planted near each other. Plant them one meter apart (3 ft.) in rows that are four to five meters (13 to 16.5 ft.) apart.

Depending on variety and conditions, they can grow from 10′ to 20′ tall but can be pruned and kept much smaller. They do best in gardening zones 3-8. Elderberries prefer rich, moist soil that is well-drained, but can tolerate many different growing conditions.

  1. The little trees appear healthy with green buds emerging. I did find it strange that they were not labeled with what they were, nor was there any paperwork with them, nor directions. I would strongly recommend that anyone buying these little plants wash all the soil off and bareroot them. They have a nice healthy root system, but the roots had grown down to the bottom of the pot, and then back to the top again, and with some circling. By barerooting them, and placing the plant on a little mound of soil and spreading the roots evenly around and down that mound, then partially filling in the planting hole, watering, adding soil to proper level to the base of the stem where the root flare starts, mulching with fine would chips (keeping the chips a few inches away from the stem) and watering again, they should have a good start.

  3. I guess I can review it better later. No planting instructions were included. Keeping my fingers crossed that I planted them correctly. (I did Google planting instructions)

  4. Shipping was super fast. The plant came in good condition. The packaging was beat up upon arrival. One leaf is damaged, but the plant seems ok for now.

  7. These are bare roots. They looked very healthy. I am withholding the 5th star until I see them sprout.

  9. I received 5 stems. They weren’t rooted much to a point where it’s on a single stem which I knew what I was buying. Let’s see if it grows. I’ll updTe review
