Buttonbush is a spreading, multi-branched shrub or sometimes small tree with many branches (often crooked and leaning), irregular crown, balls of white flowers resembling pincushions, and buttonlike balls of fruit. 6-12′ shrub when mature. Buttonbush is a handsome ornamental suited to wet soils and is also a honey plant. Ducks and other water birds and shorebirds consume the seeds. These generally bloom from June – September.

Native Buttonbush (Cephalanthus Occidentalis) is a deciduous shrub native to eastern Canada, Central America, and Cuba. It can grow as a tree up to feet tall when mature but mostly up to 12 feet tall and 8 feet wide. They thrive in full sun to partial shade, moist rich soil. Buttonbush is heat tolerant. If you want to experience their blooms, give them full sun as long as you check their moisture frequently. Buttonbush has a major wildlife benefit attracting multiple pollinators, birds and mammals.

  1. I included a note in the order asking for bare root shipment to be sent in April when plants could be immediately planted outside. It’s not clear whether Plantly didn’t see note, or if delayed shipment wasn’t possible.

  2. These were sent in a closed plastic bag but without a wet paper towel around the roots and they were dry. I don’t think they will survive.

  3. All the leaves were already off the plant and it never recovered

  4. We never received the item. Postal service is inefficient. Why not fedex or ups which is much more efficient. Probably will never receive it from postal service and lost 20 dollars!

  5. Never arrived. Was left to deal with the post office in my own. Was never resolved. I paid fifty dollars for nothing.

  6. Died shortly after I put it in a pot on the porch

  7. Only one barely survived. I fave them compost, mulch and regular watering- nothing.. sad..
