Eugenia Acutata ‘laranja’ (Cambijuva)

A rare species, appearing in the mountains and mountains of the Atlantic forest around the canastra mountain range in MG and in all the mountain forest of the Paraná river basin in SP, PR, Brazil.

Characteristics: Medium-sized tree, 3 to 7 meters high with cylindrical canopy when in the woods or pyramidal when cultivated, with forked and branched trunk. The species can be easily identified by observing new shoots that are coppery in color and becoming silvery. The fruits are rounded or piriform berries with 1.5 to 3 cm in diameter of yellowish or reddish color (according to the variety) with soft pulp involving 1 or 2 rounded and loose seeds.

Easy to grow plant, but the initial growth up to 3 years is quite slow. It resists low temperatures (up to – 3C degrees), and droughts of a maximum of 4 months. Although it is native to altitude above with 600 to 1,200 m, it can be cultivated and bears fruit well to sea level. It appreciates various types of soils, from sandy, tufuous and even sandy, but these must be deep, humid, neutral (with pH between 5.0 to 6.2). Plants are needed at least 2 plants for better production. It begins to bear fruit 4 to 5 years after planting.

Seedlings: The seeds are large rounded and sometimes with a flat side, measuring 1 to 1.4 cm in diameter, are recalcitrant (they lose germinative power in 20 days if they are dry). They germinate in 40 to 60 days, if planted on a substrate made of 40% earth, 20% sand and 40% organic matter. The seeds can be sown in planters or flower beds and then when they are 10 cm high they can be transplanted into individual packages that should be left in a place with 50% shading for approximately 1 month. The seedlings reach 35 cm with 10 months after germination.

Planting: It can be planted in full sun or in woods with large well-spaced trees. 5 x 5 m spacing between plants.

Fertilize with organic compost, + N-P-K 10-10-10 doubling this amount each year until the 3rd year, then maintain this fertilization. The plant bears fruit abundantly if it is irrigated at the time of flowering and fruiting.

Uses: Fruit in the months of December to February (in Brazil). The tree can be grown in urban deforestation, in squares and gardens. The fleshy pulp can be frozen in portions or used to make juices, ice cream, jams or even dehydrated for consumption as raisins, and can be baked in the middle of cake doughs or sweet breads. It has great commercial potential.

  1. I always struggle to find plants that will grow in the full sun, clay soil area behind my house, but this plant is hanging in and growing. I can’t wait til the hummingbirds start to come.

  2. It arrived intact, just in need of some care. I’m happy to have got this one, this tree means a lot to me – one of my favorite as a child in the countryside of Brazil.

  7. I have purchased now three cold hardy citrus (citrandarin, and swingle citrumelo) both are in ground, doing great, but this thomasville cintrangaquat is shriveled, looks dry, and not happy. Little concerned this one is not going to make it and do as well as the other two.
