Suppose you want to learn more about companion plants, meaning planting multiple seeds or plants per pot. We have an interesting article here lined up for you. When you plant more than one plant in the same container, these plants complement each other to grow better than their own.
You can grow different plants together, like vegetables and herbs; it would be best if you choose compatible plants to grow together with similar growth requirements. For instance, you can grow a cactus with other succulent plants as they do not need much water compared to a watercress that loves water.
So, to help you grow plants together, let’s unpack a bit more.
How To Plant Multiple Plants In One Pot?
When you plant multiple plants together, the herb is an excellent example of mixing with other plants. For example, you can grow sage, thyme, basil, to rosemary in a container. Another example is a succulent terrarium where you put similar plants in a pot that grow slowly and need little water.
Then you can grow tall and more petite plants to grow as an understory creating a beautiful effect. Still, the important thing is to find different types of species that grow well together without competing with each other.
Out of our personal experience, it helps to check the care of the plant, whether you want more plants in a pot or only two plants. So, check the lighting, water, temperature, and humidity, as too many plants grow well at first, but then plants compete with each other for nutrients.

Tips for Growing Multiple Plants
Growing multiple or even one or two plants in the same potting soil pot can look stunning. So, read some of the best tips here to have healthy plants.
The Pot Size
The pot size matters when growing multiple plants together. But why does this even matter? Well, growing one plant per pot does not need loads of space at first to grow. But grow two plants and more in the same pot. Then, your plants need more soil and room to grow into healthy plants.
As your plants grow at an optimum growth rate, it continues looking for more nutrients, and they can start competing with each other. So, your weaker plant will not receive the nutrients it needs to grow.
So, the best solution is to get a bigger pot with enough space to hold at least three plants. With the excess space, it helps further on to grow in size.
Check for Companion Plants
It does not matter how many plants you have in a huge pot. What matters is how compatible your plants are. Doing this will prevent more plants from competing for space, sunlight, water, and nutrients.
Also, choose houseplants with low, moderate pace growing than vigorous growth. Furthermore, avoid planting one plant with another with invasive natural growth. Good examples are aloe vera and mint.
So plant, for instance, a snake plant with a ZZ plant, a peace lily with a pothos or peacock plant, and so on.
Choose Slow-Growing Plants
For the same pot, it helps to grow slow-growth plants when planting multiple plants. This is because these plants in one pot do not need many resources. Hence, they can go without neglect for a few days and do not need much space.
Do Not Add More Than Three Plants
Whether you grow the same variety of any other species for companion planting, the critical thing to strive for is quality, as it is just important as quality.
So, the quality comes down to the growth of the plant of multiple plants in a single pot. Thus, depending on the pot, if you have one container, then having two to three companion plants works best in the long run.
The reason is that more plants struggle for resources even if they are compatible.
Water Regularly
Frequent watering is essential whether you have a small to a large container. Yet, with the lack of moisture in the potting soil, you may have different issues with your plants.
Another reason is as the number of plants is more than a plant in a single pot; they need more water. Furthermore, whether you have individual pots or one pot for many plants, it needs drainage holes at the bottom to prevent waterlogging and root rot.
Boost the Fertilizer
Using fertilizer enhances the plant’s growth, and with more than one plant in a single location, it needs more feeds to achieve a healthy growth rate. If your plants start growing with enough feeds, it leads to lackluster growth. The best is to increase the fertilizer dosage or feed them more frequently.
Transplant Often
As plants grow in different sizes, it helps to transplant often to help with rejuvenation. It is a valuable gardening method as it manages the growth of indoor and outdoor plants. So for single pots with multiple plants, it will help revive your slow-growing plants.
You can separate some of your plants to transplant them into fresh potting soil and a new pot. The time duration is every year, but if the growth speed is more, you can do this within six months.
Do Regular Pruning
If transplanting is not an option, use the traditional pruning method. You can then remove the overgrown branches and trim damaged leaves. Furthermore, it helps increase the airflow between your plants.
For other plants not growing much, a light trim at first helps by removing inward-growing branches. Also, avoid cutting the main stem as it can lead to lateral growth and stop growing upwards.

Put the Large Container in a Sunny Spot With Enough Airflow
When plants or even crops have enough sunlight, they thrive. So, place your plants in a sunny place to receive enough light. Furthermore, even if your container has enough room for more than two plants, it helps to keep enough space between plants to provide enough airflow.
Conclusion
While growing multiple plants in a large container is an excellent idea, always consider the cons. We recommend using a big pot with enough space to prevent difficulty growing. But it remains a good option for growing the same plants, herbs, or even veg and herbs together.
