USING CUTTINGS

1. Choose a growth stem of eight inches long in early autumn without a flower. The new growth will be lighter in color than the old growth.

2. Take your sterile pruner to cut the stem below a leaf node. Remove the bottom leaves and keep a set of leaves at the top.

3. Then cut the remaining leaves in half horizontally. Finally, dip the cut end into a rooting hormone.

4. Prepare a 10-inch pot with damp soil and place the cut end.

5. Cover the container with a plastic bag and cut a couple of slivers on the top of the bag for your plant to breathe.

6. Place the container in bright indirect light and keep the soil evenly moist.

7. You should see root development in about four weeks and can then transplant your cutting into the garden to develop a stronger root system.

Rooting Twist-n-shout branches directly into the soil

1. Take one of the bent-over branches and bend it to the ground so the large piece touches the soil.

2. Remove the leaves on the section touching the soil and push that part of the branch into the soil. You can also press the branch tips into the soil.

3. Secure the section in the soil with a large rock and water it like the parent plant.

4. Keep removing the stone to tug on the branch to see if new roots have developed. Once it roots, you need not weigh it down with the stone.

5. Once rooted, you can remove the branch from the mother plant to grow it as a self-sustaining shrub.

Still, if you want that rooted branch placed in a container or another section of the garden, wait a few more weeks before you clip it off the parent plant.
